It was another exciting Monday afternoon for Team Mintridge, as we had the pleasure of attending Kettering Park Junior Academy, for a fantastic afternoon of inspirational messages and athletics, with the amazing Team England and Olympic hopeful steeplechase competitor Iona Lake. We were so pleased that Kettering Park Junior Academy could benefit from this brilliant Programme, that was kindly supported by Prestige Homeseeker, who raised funds for The Mintridge Foundation earlier on in the year in a brilliant cycling challenge. As a former pupil of Kettering Park Junior Academy, the founder of Prestige Homeseeker wanted to give back to his former school and allow them to experience one of our brilliant Mintridge Programmes.
We were warmly welcomed to Kettering Park Junior Academy, as the students sat down ready for an inspirational presentation from Iona. It was so great for the pupils to hear Iona’s story and the journey she has been on to reach her success, as well as her plans for the Olympics next year. There were some very key messages for the pupils to hear, including the need to have a growth mindset and see failure as a positive learning journey. The levels of resilience and perseverance that Iona has already shown throughout her sporting career, really inspired the pupils to take that into their own lives in and out of school.
Iona brought along a prized medal to show the students from the British Championships as well as her spikes she used to race in. The students asked lots of questions about Iona’s event and her sporting journey after the assembly. Some of the best questions were;
Are we allowed to take part in running at that distance at this age?
What happens when you fall down?
What was your favourite sport when you were younger?
Why do you love taking part in running and sport so much?
After the presentation, two of the classes from Kettering Park Junior took part in two practical athletics taster sessions, where they learnt all about the need to develop strong movement skills and their coordination, balance and agility.
The students had lots of fun competing against their peers in the relay style races and challenging themselves to the activities that Iona set them. At the end of each of the sessions, the pupils had their photograph taken with Iona and got to take away a signed autograph card. Iona also awarded a medal and certificate to pupils in the group who applied their skills well in the drills and really gave maximum effort throughout the afternoon.
We are so glad that we could visit Kettering Park Junior Academy for this fantastic Programme. Thank you again to Prestige Homeseeker for supporting the Programme and allowing the students at Kettering Park Junior Academy to experience this brilliant Mintridge Programme.
