Wow! What a day we had at Ruskin Academy with the amazing Shona McCallin MBE! We were delighted to be invited back to Ruskin Academy for day of Hockey with our GB Olympic gold medallist.
Shona opened the morning with an inspirational presentation, all about her sporting journey and the rollercoaster ride to success. Shona shared her stories all about how she has dealt with setbacks and challenges throughout her career so far. The students were extremely excited to learn that Shona had brought her shiny Rio Olympic gold medal with her for the pupils to see, if they could find it. As the pupils in the assembly searched around the room, it was impossible for them to see Shona’s gold medal, until it was spotted! As Shona opened the box, the room took a deep breath in, as they saw the gold medal in all its glory. At the end of the assembly, the students took their chance to ask Shona any questions they had about her sporting career so far. Some of the best questions from our morning were:
How does it feel being a hockey player?
How does it feel to win a medal?
Will you do anything differently if you go to the next Olympics?
Are you still in touch with any of your coaches?
What sport would you choose if you didn’t play hockey?
What hockey team do you support?
As the morning progressed, Shona started the practical hockey sessions and had lots of fun with coaching the students. As Shona showed them the basics, it was time for them to show off their skills in a series of fun races, looking after the hockey ball every step of the way.
The coaching sessions were a chance for the students to be coached by a player at the top of her game, and it was apparent the students were working extremely hard to show Shona what they could do.
At the end of each of the sessions, Shona got everyone together for a group photograph with the Mintridge photo props and she handed out signed autograph cards for the group to take away with them, so they could remember their special morning of hockey with our GB gold medallist. Shona also presented two students from each group with a certificate and medal for their hard work and resilience within the sessions.
