On Tuesday 19th March, Triple Olympian, Becky Gallantree made her way to Caldercuilt Primary School in Glasgow thanks to the kind donation from the generous team at Squadkit. Squadkit’s generosity enabled the P5 students to learn about Becky’s journey to Diving World Championship Gold with her partner, Tom Daley.
Becky gave a detailed account of her diving career that spanned over twenty years which equates to 253 medals (there were plenty of gasps at that huge figure from students) but Becky was particularly keen for the students to learn that despite her successes, she still felt nerves like everyone else in the room and she still made mistakes as well. “Sleep and enjoyment are two of the biggest factors that led to my rise” stressed the Commonwealth Champion and she urged every pupil to remember that in whatever they aspire to do whether in sport, music, art or anything else.
There had been great preparation from all students ahead of Becky’s visit and therefore hands shot up when it was time for questions:
“What sports do you enjoy outside of diving?”
“Who inspired you to start diving?”
“What is the highest height that you have ever dived from?”
Everyone wrote down their aspirations for Becky to see after hearing her story and there were some great, ambitious plans for our Caldercuilt pupils. While they were dreaming big, big, big, Becky was making her way to the back of the classroom to demonstrate a black flip to everyone’s enjoyment – it was incredible to see Becky’s athleticism!
Before returning home, Becky showed everyone her medals which was a special bonus as all the students were able to try them on. A Mintridge programme isn’t complete without plenty of photos and autographs from the sporting superstar. The photos are available with your school staff if you wish to see them. If you would like to see the video from our programme, you can visit our YouTube Channel just here: https://youtu.be/SIGY4OG1cxI
Thank you very much to the Caldercuilt staff for welcoming Becky and the Mintridge team and we hope to see you again soon.
A huge vote of thanks to our wonderful partners at Squadkit who enabled this programme to go ahead, we are so grateful for your ongoing support.
