Mintridge Bronze Rugby Programme with Justine Lucas, Sturton by Stow Primary School, January 2019

Team Mintridge were delighted to be welcomed by Sturton by Stow Primary School on Wednesday 9th January, for a fun filled day of rugby with our Loughborough Lightning and England rugby Ambassador Justine Lucas.

Our day began with an inspirational presentation led by Justine, who talked all about her story and journey into rugby. During the presentation the students got an insight into the world of elite sport and how important it is to have respect and tolerance for other people. It was great for the students to hear how sport can help you make friends and stay fit and healthy.

The Year 5 and 6 class kindly stayed behind after the assembly to write their aspirations, questions and goals down, which they then posted in our Mintridge golden post box. Some of the best questions for Justine were:

Do you still have the metal plate in your foot?

Before you played rugby what sport did you play?

What rugby number are you?

What is the best rugby game you have ever played in?

Who is your favourite person to play against?

All the classes enjoyed their own personalised coaching session throughout the day with Justine, which involved a range of activities including dodging, scoring a try and learning more in-depth techniques used in a rugby game. Justine showed the students images of her and her team mates scoring a try, taking a tackle, performing a line out and a holding their position in a scrum. Justine incorporated all the newly learned skills into an adapted, fun, high intensity warm up.

It was a special session for each class as Justine had brought along her England kit for the students to see and feel and showed the class her numerous medals, each accompanied by a special story and memory.

It wouldn’t be a Mintridge day without the students getting the chance to have their photo taken with Justine, inside the twitter frame and with their class mates. They also all received a signed autograph card from Justine to take away and add to their Mintridge collection.

We are very grateful to Sturton by Stow Primary school for inviting The Mintridge Foundation back to deliver their first rugby session. We hope that the students feel inspired to keep on playing!
