On an exciting Friday evening in November, The Mintridge Foundation had the pleasure of attending Corby Athletic Club’s Sports Awards Evening with the fantastic Laura Sugar. The club were hosting the evening to celebrate all the talented athletes that had worked hard throughout a tough year of competitions.
It was an excellent celebration of all the achievements that had been gained throughout the year, including the numerous records that had been broken, multiple competition wins and athletes that had qualified for major championships.
The Foundation and Laura were welcomed by the fantastic volunteers that help to run the club and facilitate all the competitions and training for the athletes. To open the night the club introduced the audience to their brand-new website, highlighting the development of the club over the last year. After this they welcomed Laura to the stage. Laura gave an inspirational presentation about her journey to success and what success means for different people. Laura also talked about how she has previously shown resilience and perseverance in the face of some major setbacks. A very powerful message for the athletes in the room.
It was not long into the night that the awards began to flow. Laura presented each athlete with their trophy or multiple trophies for some. Half way through the evening, we played a game of ‘Heads or Tails’, which Laura and Team Mintridge didn’t go on to win, but it was great fun and we were pleased we were asked to take part. During the break for dinner, the athletes in the room took the chance to speak to Laura and ask her questions about competing and how to really develop themselves as individual athletes and cope with the pressures of training and competition.
We celebrated the award winners at the end of the evening with group and individual photos, and allowed some time for the parents and athletes to speak to Laura about the evening and her competition medals. It was a complete surprise to most to find out how heavy the European Championship medals were from Berlin. It was so nice to hear the good luck messages for Laura for the upcoming year and her next major championships next year. The parents and athletes in the room then had the chance to post any messages in our Mintridge golden Post box and walk away with an autograph from Laura.
Thank you to all the athletes, parents, volunteers and organisers from Corby Athletic Club for inviting The Mintridge Foundation and Laura to be a part of your awards evening. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with you.
