On a glorious November afternoon, The Mintridge Foundation had an exciting day of football planned for Laura Bassett and her two Wootton Park mentees, their parents and teachers. As a celebration of their Mintridge Gold Programme and a half way point in their six months of mentoring with Laura, the mentees joined us to watch a thrilling football match, accompanied by our very own Lioness and footballing superstar Laura Bassett, who sat with the girls throughout the match.
The Birmingham City Women vs West Ham United Women FC game turned out to be an exciting match full of surprises. With the ladies showing off the best of their skills and taking numerous chances on goal, the supporters were in for a treat when the goals started coming early in the first half. Birmingham City Women took the lead early in the game with the ball just making it past the keeper on the goal line. Although one of Laura’s mentees thought the goal hadn’t gone in, it was safe to say there was a goal added to the soon to be triple for Birmingham. As the game went on, the mentees discussed the play with Laura as well as the topics they had been talking about throughout their mentoring sessions. It was such a great experience getting to sit with Laura and to hear her take on the game.
At the end of the enthralling 3-0 win for Birmingham City Women, Laura arranged for her mentees to join her and the players on the pitch. It was a special time for the mentees as they were able to take photos with the players and grab autographs in their match programmes. Laura and the players had so much time for the girls and asked them questions about the game and their own standard of play. The team manager was particularly interested in how the Super League football match differed from the girls own club matches.
The mentees thoroughly enjoyed the match and sitting with Laura throughout the game. The day was an amazing experience and a memory the mentees will treasure forever. It was so great to see the impact the mentoring is already having on Laura’s mentees, as well as getting to hear all about the tips they are taking on board to help improve their own game.
Thank you to Laura and Birmingham City Women for a great match and the amazing meet and greet opportunity at the end of the game.
We would also like to thank the Wootton Park School teachers for joining us for the match and the mentees parents for supporting them through their mentoring experience.
We can’t wait to hear how the mentees progress over the next few months of their mentoring sessions with Laura.
Wootton Park School have all the photos from the day if you would like to see them.
