We really love our visits to Ingham Primary School and this visit certainly didn’t disappoint!
After visiting Ingham two days before with Molly Thompson – Smith, Ingham were already geared up for a second Mintridge Programme with the amazing Ben Smith, who would deliver a day of cricket for the whole school throughout the day.
Ben started the morning with an inspirational presentation, all about his sporting journey and the challenges he has faced along the way. It was particularly interesting for the students to hear Ben talk about the sacrifices he has made throughout his sporting career.
During the presentation, Ben spoke about what cricket had given him, including a sense of community, fairness and hope, especially in the highlights of his cricket career and his work as a coach. Towards the end of the presentation the pupils were able to ask Ben any questions they had. Some of the best questions were:
How far was your furthest shot?
How often would you train as a professional cricketer?
How many countries have you visited?
How many games have you won in your career?
How did it feel to be part of a cricket team?
If you couldn’t be a cricketer, what would you be?
After the presentations, Ben went straight into the practical coaching sessions with the students, who worked extremely hard to compete against their partner in lots of cricket related competitions. The coaching sessions covered a wide range of cricket skills including the fielding, batting and bowling elements of the game.
It was so great to see the pupils having fun and showing off their new skills to Ben at the end of the coaching sessions in a small sided cricket game.
At the end of each of the sessions the students all walked away with a signed autograph card from Ben and some fun pictures in the Mintridge Twitter frame and with our Mintridge photo props.
Ben also had the pleasure of meeting his two new mentees from Ingham, who he will be mentoring for the next six months over Skype. We can’t wait to see and hear all about how they will progress during their mentoring Programme with Ben.
