Strength in Sport and Beyond: Sporting Icons Visit St Mary’s Ascot
On a beautiful sunny day on the 6th September, Team Mintridge was warmly welcomed to St Mary’s, Ascot with Eboni Usoro-Brown, Grace Balsdon OLY and Aileen Whelan to kick off the school’s sporting season in style with some of our country’s greatest athletes!
All the ambassadors led sessions in the morning coaching students from Years 7, 8 and 9 in their respective sports – netball, hockey and football. With many new students at the school, it was an opportunity for them to learn new skills from some sporting role models. After lunch, open sessions ran for Years 10-13 to join a session with one of the three incredible ambassadors. With certificates and medals handed out to some students, there were certainly lots of smiles around!
The day concluded with a Panel session with the three ambassadors. A video of each ambassador was played, showing a montage of high points in their careers which they all look back on now and still feel emotional. The floor was then opened up to the sports scholars present:
“What triggered you on your journey?”
“Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
“What was it like playing in Tokyo with no crowd?”
“When did you realise you could make a career from sport?”
“Were the sacrifices worth it?”
“What advice would you give about balancing work and training?”
Thank you to all the staff at St Mary’s for the very warm reception received, and also a big thank you to the Sports Captain for her incredible help on the day!
