A Successful Innings - T20 MAX TEAMS ACHIEVE THE £20,000 RUN CHASE

Covid – 19 wasn’t going to stop them for a second year in a row… And Old Kimboltonians, Kimbolton Cricket Club, Stamford Rugby Club and the John Lightfoot XI certainly kicked off the Inaugural T20 Max in style on the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

The T20 Max, the brainchild of Rory Fenton, Will Kirkpatrick, Nick Ibbotson, Guy Newsom, Laurence Weman and James Biddle was started to celebrate the life of their school friend, Max Hunter who died by suicide in August 2019. Not only this, but the celebration would also help raise valuable funds for the Max Hunter Fund within the Mintridge Foundation – a tangible way to make real change with mental health awareness in agricultural colleges across the UK through sporting role models.

The opening innings was at 11am, and in true Max style, we were pleased to hear that the party was still going strong at 2am on Sunday morning. Huge Congratulations to Kimbolton Cricket Club for taking home the trophy, we can’t wait to return in 2022 to see who will be named victorious! Many squad members were donning their cricket whites for the first time in over a decade, which goes to show what a popular friend Max was.

We are delighted that the £1976.50 raised through BBQ, Bar Sales and a raffle that included a certain Alastair Cook signed shirt (thank you very much for organising Alice Brodie) and a signed copy of The Power In You directly from Henry Fraser (an artist that Max loved) has taken the Max Hunter Fund to £20,000 in its first year. A contribution of the £20,000 will be put to good use next month.

After many postponements due to the Covid – 19 Pandemic, the Max Hunter Fund Programme will finally be able to launch on 15th October at Shuttleworth College with Mintridge Foundation Ambassadors, British shotgun shooter, Georgina Roberts and ex professional cricketer, Patrick Foster.  The two athletes will each be sharing their sporting journeys with students across a six-month period to keep our much loved friend Max’s fun, caring and sporting memory alive. They will be changing perceptions and challenging stereotypes in the process. Georgie and Patrick compete in two of Max’s favourite sports and they will be encouraging a new dialogue around how to look after our mental health just as we do our physical. Alongside them, Sherry Adams from We Mind & Kelly Matters will deliver a SAFE talk to the students as well as ongoing support for the college too.

We can’t think of a greater team to be launching our Max Hunter programmes, slowly but surely changing the narrative around mental health but ensuring that one of Max’s favourite things, sport, is used as the powerful vehicle that it is to drive it. We are looking forward to building upon our partnership with We Mind & Kelly Matters - a charity with shared values and a desire to change lives.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors  - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as Fitswarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
