World Medallist Boxer Hannah Beharry Visits Hazel Leys Academy

On 16th January, Hazel Leys Academy welcomed a special visitor -  British, European and World Champion boxer Hannah Beharry who spent the day at the school as part of the Mintridge Foundation programme. The 18th Visit by an ambassador to the school, continuing a successful and well-established partnership.

A whole-school assembly started the day off, with Hannah addressing all of the primary school pupils, telling her story and the journey into boxing. She shared how hard work, discipline and self-belief helped her progress through the sport & competing at the highest level. Hannah spoke openly about the challenges she faced along the way, highlighting the importance of perseverance and a positive mindset.

Pupils were encouraged to ask questions, and Hannah took time to answer them, making the session engaging and relatable for all ages.

How many fights have you won?
How many times are you at the gym each week?
Did you fight with your brothers?

Introductions and having a go!

Following the assembly, Hannah delivered coaching sessions with each class across the school. These sessions introduced pupils to boxing-based activities that focused on coordination, balance, teamwork and confidence, with an emphasis on participation and effort rather than competition.

The school was filled with energy as pupils practised footwork, punches and movement drills under Hannah’s guidance. Her positive and supportive coaching approach helped pupils of all abilities feel comfortable getting involved, with many growing in confidence as the sessions progressed.

The day supported both physical activity and wider personal development, reinforcing important skills such as determination, respect and self-belief.

Partnerships with meaning

Hannah’s visit was another successful chapter in Hazel Leys Academy’s ongoing partnership with the Mintridge Foundation. As the 18th ambassador to visit, it demonstrated the continued commitment to providing pupils with meaningful sporting experiences and positive role models.

A huge thank you to all the staff at Hazel Leys Academy for their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in the sessions. Their support helped showcase just how well-behaved and engaged the students were throughout. We’re really looking forward to returning later in the year with Mintridge Ambassadors Leon Greenwood and Ben Gallagher.

We were extremely pleased to be joined by Hannah from Sport 4 Life UK, one of our newest Impact Partners, who shared the day with us and experienced a Mintridge Programme first-hand.

By the end of the day, pupils left with new skills, increased confidence and plenty to reflect on. Hannah Beharry’s visit was a memorable and impactful experience for the whole school.
