Ben Gallagher Para Rower and Explorer Visits Hazel Leys Academy
Mintridge Ambassador Ben Gallagher recently visited Hazel Leys Academy, delivering an engaging and action-packed day for pupils across the school.
Ben began the visit by sharing his remarkable personal journey with the entire school. Pupils listened intently as he spoke about his time in the Armed Forces and the life-changing moment when he was medically discharged from service. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, Ben channelled his determination into new challenges, embarking on a journey that led him to para rowing and competing at the Invictus Games.
The importance of resilience, adaptability and maintaining a positive mindset
His story highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability and maintaining a positive mindset when faced with obstacles. Ben also spoke about the many adventures and achievements that have followed, including desert marathons, rowing challenges, skiing and qualifying as an adaptive skiing instructor. His experiences demonstrated that there are always new opportunities to explore, no matter what challenges life presents.
Following the assembly, pupils had the opportunity to put their own teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test through a series of orienteering activities led by Ben. Classes headed outside to the playground and field, eagerly searching for clues and cones while working together to complete their challenges. The activities kept pupils active, engaged and smiling throughout the sessions.
When the weather eventually took a turn for the worse, the learning continued indoors. Ben delivered additional classroom sessions where pupils were able to ask further questions about his presentation, his sporting career and the experiences that have shaped his journey. The thoughtful and enthusiastic questions from pupils reflected the impact of Ben’s story and the curiosity it sparked.
“How many medals do you have?”
“What was your favourite place?”
“Why did you choose to run around the desert?”
The day was filled with energy, enthusiasm and plenty of smiling faces as pupils raced back with their answers and celebrated their successes. Ben’s visit provided a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn about perseverance, embracing challenges and the value of stepping outside their comfort zones.
Special thanks
A huge thank you to Ben for sharing his experiences and spending time with the pupils at Hazel Leys Academy and a huge THANK YOU to Hazel Leys Academy for hosting us again and fully embracing the day like they always do. We hope his visit has left a lasting impression on pupils and staff alike, reinforcing the message that setbacks do not have to limit future achievements.
