Commonwealth Gold Meets Community Running at Wicksteed Junior Parkrun
Commonwealth Gold Meets Community Running at Wicksteed junior parkrun
Sunday 19 April saw a collaboration of the Mintridge Foundation, the Johnny Reynolds Foundation, Kettering Buccleuch Academy and Wicksteed junior parkrun host a memorable and record-breaking morning, as children, families and volunteers were joined by Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Mintridge Sports Ambassador Emmanuel Oyinbo‑Coker.
The visit formed part of Mintridge Foundation’s ongoing work with Kettering Buccleuch Academy, supporting young people through positive sporting role models and inclusive opportunities to be physically active.
Bringing Schools and Community Together
Emmanuel attended Wicksteed Junior parkrun as part of a programme delivered at Kettering Buccleuch Academy to help encourage physical, social and emotional wellbeing, and introduce children to the weekly community led parkrun in a welcoming and supportive environment to encourage their ongoing participation.
Trustees from the Johnny Reynolds Foundation, whose funding enabled this programme were in attendance and ran with the children and Emmanuel.
From School Visit to Continued Support
Emmanuel first visited Kettering Buccleuch Academy as part of a Mintridge programme in 2025, with students taking part in his practical sessions learning the importance of warm-ups and stretching. Since then, his involvement has continued through regular mentoring of two senior school students, providing encouragement and guidance to help them develop their confidence and grow as sports leaders, engaging other pupils in the programmes leading up to their participation in the junior parkrun.
The mentoring focuses on building confidence and leadership, in parallel with helping the students demonstrate that running can be accessible, enjoyable and something to look forward to rather than fear.
Leading by Example on the Day
On the day, Emmanuel and the Johnny Reynolds Foundation trustees completed the run alongside the children, reinforcing the importance of shared participation and positive role modelling.
Before the run began, Emmanuel led the warm‑up and countdown to the start, helping to settle nerves and build excitement. After the event, he spent time talking with children, parents and volunteers, taking photos, selfies and engaging with everyone involved.
Personal Bests and Positive First Experiences
The morning produced several personal bests, and for many children it marked their first junior parkrun. Supported by excellent weather and a friendly, encouraging atmosphere, the experience was enjoyable rather than intimidating.
For those taking part for the first time, the event helped turn any initial nerves into pride and excitement, and a desire to return.
A Record‑Breaking Morning at Wicksteed
In total, 129 children crossed the finish line, making it the highest attendance to date at Wicksteed junior parkrun. The record turnout reflected the strength of the local parkrun community and the positive impact of collaborative work between schools, charities and sporting role models.
Creating Lasting Impact Through Sport
Mintridge Foundation is proud to organise and deliver programmes that connect schools with inspirational ambassadors like Emmanuel Oyinbo‑Coker. With the support of partners such as the Johnny Reynolds Foundation, these opportunities help create positive experiences of sport that build confidence, resilience and enjoyment.
Sunday’s Wicksteed junior parkrun demonstrated how sustained engagement, strong partnerships and community sport can come together to inspire the next generation.
