Hazel Leys Academy - A Day of Discovery, Determination & The First Steps Into Fencing with Heather Fell OLY

On Friday 6th June 2025, Team Mintridge were again warmly welcomed back to Hazel Leys Academy, part of the Greenwood Academies Trust – this time with Modern Pentathlon Olympic Silver Medallist, Heather Fell OLY following the successful visits from Stevie Eskinazi and Lorna Mackenzie from the world of cricket and hockey.

Heather Fell OLY delivered a day of fencing and the story that took her to the dizzy heights of the Olympic Podium.

Heather showed pupils throughout the day what is possible with courage, curiosity and commitment.

During her presentation to the whole school, Heather explained that she had been very fortunate to grow up where she was able to ride horses from a very young age; this helped her later on to compete in the Olympics in Modern Pentathlon.

After the presentation, the hall was prepared for practical sessions for all year groups from Reception to Year 6 which enabled all the children to have a go at fencing and we hope, ignite a fire within many of the students to join a local fencing club in Northamptonshire!

Year 6 were also very lucky to have more time with Heather during a Q&A session in the classroom. Heather had two volunteers dressing in her fencing kit – what a joy!  Great questions were asked throughout the day!

How old were you when you learnt to ride?
When did you start fencing?
How many medals have you won?

Thank you once again to everyone at Hazel Leys Academy for welcoming us back again!
